Applied anatomy course with cadaveric dissection focused on surgical approaches to the tibial plateau. 

The course integrates physiotherapists and orthopaedic residents, allowing guided observation and assistance during dissection of the four main tibial plateau approaches (anteromedial, anterolateral, posteromedial and posterolateral), with step-by-step demonstration by knee specialists and standardized photographic documentation of anatomical exposure. 

A profound understanding of human anatomy remains one of the fundamental pillars of clinical practice, from surgical orthopaedics to advanced rehabilitation. Despite technological advances in imaging, surgical navigation, and digital simulation, there remains a persistent need for true three-dimensional knowledge obtained through cadaveric dissection, particularly in anatomically complex regions such as the knee — and especially the tibial plateau. 

This course addresses the need to deepen the three-dimensional understanding of applied surgical anatomy of the knee, enabling rigorous comprehension of the different surgical approaches, the neurovascular, ligamentous, and tendinous structures at risk, and the associated technical, functional, and rehabilitative implications. 

For physiotherapists, this training fills the need to:
  • Understand anatomical surgical dissection planes; 
  • Identify vulnerable structures; Integrate real joint biomechanics and capsuloligamentous stabilization into clinical reasoning;
  • Adapt rehabilitation strategies according to the specific surgical approach performed.

For orthopaedic residents, it responds to the need to:
  • Consolidate and/or learn tibial plateau surgical approaches; 
  • Develop safe handling of the different anatomical structures;
  • Reduce the risk of intraoperative complications;
  • Improve surgical planning in complex fracture patterns;
  • Understand the true differences in articular and cortical exposure between approaches.

Additionally, there is limited objective characterization of the exposure potential provided by each surgical approach. This course addresses this gap by enabling standardized documentation and systematic comparative analysis, thereby contributing to evidence-based practice and potential scientific output.
