About the course

Based on the evidence not only of the increasing number of patients with Parkinson disease but also that not all patients with indication for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) are being treated in Portugal it is essential to have increasing knowledge that can help to reduce the problem of under reference for a therapy that has well known clinical and socio economical benefits.

Participants of the course will learn about indications, technique, results, complications and postoperative follow up of DBS in Parkinson disease and other movement disorders. The importance of team work and changes in quality of life of patients and families is emphasized before discussing technical innovations and future perspectives of the technique. All theorical classes will always be followed by a debate and questions / answers about the topic.

Besides lectures the course will include a simulation session (where participants will have the opportunity to identify in a computer model deep brain structures related with DBS and to put an electrode on the target) and a live surgery (with the opportunity to follow a DBS surgery and interact in real time with the surgical team).

In summary the course is based on the state of the art of DBS with the purpose of a better referral that can be useful for all patients able to improve their lives with this therapy.
